WUHAN, China - Two-time champion Petra Kvitova returns to defend her title at the Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open next month.
She will be joined by Wimbledon champion Garbiñe Muguruza, French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko, Angelique Kerber, Karolina Pliskova and Simona Halep.
The WTA Premier 5 tournament, held at the Optics Valley International Tennis Centre from September 22 to 30, will feature some of the biggest names in tennis.
“I’m very excited to come back to Wuhan and play in front of the Chinese fans again. They’re always so much fun to play for because as players we can really feel their enthusiasm,” said former Wuhan runner-up Muguruza. “I’ve played well in Wuhan in the past and it’s a tournament I always love to play.”
Seventeen of the world’s Top 20 players have signed up to play in Wuhan, including eight of the current Top 10 - includings six Grand Slam singles champions (Muguruza, Kerber, Ostapenko, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Petra Kvitova and Samantha Stosur).
Co-tournament director Zhu Jianbin said: "We have brought some of the best female athletes in the world to Wuhan as part of our plan to grow this event into one of the best-known tennis tournaments in the world. It's a wonderful opportunity to showcase the city of Wuhan as a focus for international sport, as well as a chance to see women's tennis at its very best.”
