MATCH POINTS

Defending champion Alizé Cornet faces qualifier Jasmine Paolini for the first time. Paolini, who made her Grand Slam debut at Roland Garros this year and followed it up by winning the ITF W60 in Brescia, is bidding for the second Top 50 scalp of her career following her upset of Daria Kasatkina in Prague last year en route to the Italian's only previous WTA-level quarterfinal. Cornet, who won last year's edition of the tournament held in Gstaad, is the only player remaining in the field who has reached a WTA final in Switzerland.

No.7 seed Daria Gavrilova is bidding to win back-to-back matches for just the third time this season, and to reach her second quarterfinal of 2019 following Strasbourg. The Australian defeated Natalia Vikhlyantseva 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 in their only previous meeting in the first round of Rome 2018.

Liudmila Samsonova and lucky loser Han Xinyun meet for the second time in a month. Three weeks ago, the pair clashed in the first round of Wimbledon qualies, with Samsonova winning 6-3, 2-6, 6-1. The Russian is gunning for her maiden WTA quarterfinal, while Han is bidding for her sixth, and first since Nanchang 2017.
