There was plenty of laughter as well as plenty of selfies as WTA stars enjoyed themselves at the Mutua Madrid Open's inaugural Tie Break Tens.

MADRID, Spain - The inaugural Tie Break Tens tournament at the Mutua Madrid Open found the tennis world in a light-hearted mood. Garbiñe Muguruza casually warmed up on the exercise bike on court while Svetlana Kuznetsova and Maria Sharapova chatted behind her.

Even Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, watching from Rabat, was entertained by how chilled Kuznetsova was.

Perhaps too chilled, though. She pulled off taking a selfie while on the bike later, but as WTA Insider Courtney Nguyen observed in last night's live blog, multitasking can be fraught with danger.

I expect these semifinals to be much tighter affairs now that the players are all warmed up. Then again, Kuznetsova almost fell off her bike trying to get on court for the warm-up so...who knows!

Here's a more sensible way to take a selfie, courtesy of Monica Puig - who also got Kuznetsova, Simona Halep, Grigor Dimitrov and Fernando Verdasco involved.

It wasn't long before the selfie itself popped up on Twitter.

As the rapid-fire format sprinted towards its business end, the mood became a little more competitive.

And in the end, the last woman standing was last year's Mutua Madrid Open champion, Simona Halep, who beat Svetlana Kuznetsova in the final.

It's not crazy to wonder if that could be the Madrid final this year. Or even the French Open final...
