MATCH POINTS

Former World No.1 players Angelique Kerber and Maria Sharapova will square off on Thursday, having evenly split their eight previous meetings. Sharapova won four of their first five matches before Kerber ran off three straight since 2014.

Kerber won her only prior encounter against Sharapova on grass, in three tough sets in the fourth round at 2014 Wimbledon. Their most recent clash came in the third round of the 2018 Australian Open, where Kerber prevailed in straight sets.

Sharapova is playing her first event since handing her compatriot Daria Kasatkina a walkover in the second round of St. Petersburg in late January due to shoulder woes. She picked up her first win since the first round of that event on Tuesday when she ousted Viktoria Kuzmova.

Belinda Bencic opens play on Thursday against American qualifier Shelby Rogers. Bencic has won two of her three meetings with Rogers, but all of their encounters have gone three sets. They have not played each other since Beijing in 2014, and this will be their first meeting on grass.

Amanda Anisimova and Alizé Cornet will meet for the first time, as will Caroline Garcia and Paula Badosa. Anisimova and Garcia have both had very recent successes: Anisimova reached the semifinals of Roland Garros in her last event, while Garcia is on a six-match winning streak after winning the Nottingham title and outlasting Victoria Azarenka in this week's opening round.
