LONDON, Great Britain - Top seeds Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Safarova began their quest for a fourth straight Grand Slam title with a 7-5, 6-2 first round victory over Jennifer Brady and Alison Riske at Wimbledon on Wednesday.
The top seeds led seven seeded teams into the second round on the first day of doubles play, as both No.10 seeds and Miami Open champions Gabriela Dabrowski and Xu Yi-fan and No.16 seeds Eri Hozumi and Miyu Kato fell at the first hurdle.
Also advancing were No.3 seeds Martina Hingis and Chan Yung-jan, who surrendered just two games against Xenia Knoll and Alizé Cornet, 6-0, 6-2, while No.5 seeds Lucie Hradecka and Katerina Siniakova were also winners over a pair of Americans, Taylor Townsend and Asia Muhammad, 6-4, 7-6(6).
Former Wimbledon champion Sania Mirza, who was forced to switch partners at the last minute ahead of the Championships due to an injury to Yaroslava Shvedova, opened her Wimbledon with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Naomi Osaka and Zhang Shuai alongside Kirsten Flipkens. The duo are the No.13 seeds, and Mirza looks to reach the second week at Wimbledon after being bounced in week one of the first two Grand Slams of the season.
Mirza and Flipkens could be on a collision course with the Indian's former partner Hingis and Chan in the third round.
Both the No.9 seeds and the No.15 seeds were pushed to three-setters, but came through to advance to the second round. Chan Hao-ching and Monica Niculescu defeated Veronica Cepede Royg and Raluca Olaru, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, while Andrea Klepac and Maria Jose Mártinez Sanchez ousted the Rodionova sisters, Anastasia and Arina, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
Rounding out the victories for the seeded teams on Wednesday were Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Kveta Peschke, the No.12 seeds, who advanced past Kristyna Pliskova and Viktorija Golubic, 6-4, 6-3.
Svetlana Kuznetsova and Kristina Mladenovic come into Wimbledon unseeded, but the looming team that reached the third round of Roland Garros saw off Nicole Melichar and Anna Smith, 6-4, 6-3, and set up a meeting with Monqiue Adamczak and Storm Sanders, who defeated the seeded team of Hozumi and Kato, 6-1, 6-2.
