MIAMI, FL, USA - Tuesday marks the opening day of main draw competition and final day of qualifying at the Miami Open. Grandstand matches feature two Americans in the first two matches of the day - Madison Brengle will play Aleksandra Krunic to see who will advance to face Caroline Wozniacki, followed by WTA Rising Star Shelby Rogers versus Monica Niculescu, with the winner advancing to the play defending champion Serena Williams in the next round.
[WC] CiCi Bellis (USA #211) vs. [WC] Indy de Vroome (NED #227)
Head-to-Head: First Meeting
The most intriguing match-up of the day can be found on Court 1 with two wildcards meeting head-to-head as Catherine "CiCi" Bellis takes on Indy de Vroome. Last year at the US Open, a 15-year-old Bellis made headlines, quickly becoming a household name with an opening round win over No.12 seed Dominika Cibulkova, as Bellis became the youngest player to win a US Open match in 18 years. Yet to turn pro, Bellis enters Miami with a career-high ranking of No.211 and three ITF Circuit titles to her credit, including at the last tournament she played, a $25,000 in Rancho Santa Fe, California.
De Vroome, on the other hand, is playing in her fourth career main draw event. Earlier this year the 17-year-old from The Netherlands defeated Tsvetana Pironkova in Antwerp for her first career main draw win before falling in the next round to Cibulkova.
The winner of Bellis versus de Vroome will advance to face No.32 seed Zarina Diyas in the next round, with a possible match-up against Williams looming.
