SINGAPORE - WTA Rising Star Garbiñe Muguruza and Carla Suárez Navarro, champions in Stanford and finalists at another pair of Premier events in Madrid and Tokyo, have become the seventh team to qualify for the doubles event at the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global.
They haven't even played the whole season together - they only started in Miami - but Muguruza and Suárez Navarro have come on very strong over the six or seven months since then, achieving the aforementioned results and now making it into the WTA's crown jewel event in their first try together.
And they're one of the most dangerous opponents for the top teams too. They've had wins this year over five of the first six qualifiers - Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci, Hsieh Su-Wei and Peng Shuai, Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina, Raquel Kops-Jones and Abigail Spears, and Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik. The only one missing: they're 0-2 against Cara Black and Sania Mirza.
Both Muguruza and Suárez Navarro will be playing the WTA Finals for the first time in any capacity.
"I have enjoyed playing this year with Carla and we are both excited about Singapore," Muguruza said. "Ever since reaching the final in Madrid, we set a goal to qualify for the WTA Finals. It will be an honor to compete against the best eight doubles teams in the world on the best stage in women's tennis."
