MADRID, Spain - The Mutua Madrid Open has announced its wildcards for the third WTA Premier Mandatory event of 2017, and the group consists of former champions, fan favorites and rising stars.
In the main draw, Maria Sharapova and Francesca Schiavone will be joined by Spaniards Lara Arruabarrena and Sara Sorribes Tormo, as well as Romania's Sorana Cirstea.
Sharapova won the tournament in 2014, while Schiavone's wildcard was announced in late April following her victory at the Claro Open Colsanitas in Bogota.
Cirstea is a wildcard for the second straight year in Madrid; the World No.64 reached the quarterfinals at last year's tournament, losing to eventual runner-up Dominika Cibulkova.
In qualifying, former World No.5 Daniela Hantuchova leads the quartet, which also includes two Spaniards - 2015 French Open girls' champion Paula Badosa Gibert and Silvia Soler-Espinosa - and Russia's Varvara Flink, who reached the No.2 junior ranking in 2014.
