5 KEY FACTS FOR MONDAY'S MATCHES

No.3 seed Zhang Shuai is still looking for her first red clay win of 2017, while rising opponent Océane Dodin notched up a third-round showing in Madrid.

18-year-old qualifier Marie Bouzkova was the 2014 US Open girls' champion, and this marks her third appearance in a WTA main draw following Acapulco 2015 (as a wildcard, losing to Sesil Karatantcheva in the first round) and Biel this April (also as a qualifier, taking a set from No.1 seed Barbora Strycova in the first round before going down).

Elise Mertens is enjoying one of the year's best breakthroughs, having won her first title as a qualifier in Hobart in January, and following it up with an appearance in the Istanbul final last month.

No.6 seed Julia Goerges has played her opponent today, Nao Hibino, twice, and won both times - by 6-7(3), 6-2, 6-4 in Auckland last year, and 7-6(6), 6-4 in Miami a few months later.

When former World No.59 Alexandra Cadantu qualified for Istanbul in April, it was her first WTA main draw in three years, since Baku in 2014. The wait for another one wasn't as long this time - a month later, she's qualified for Nürnberg.
