Yulia Putintseva and Sorana Cirstea have evenly split their four previous encounters. Putintseva leads 2-1 on clay, but the clay-court match the Kazakh lost to Cirstea came in the Nurnberg quarterfinals in 2017.
This is the third straight year Cirstea has played at Nurnberg, and she has made at least the final eight each time -- she reached the semifinals in 2017 and the quarterfinals last year.
Putintseva's three-hour and 21-minute quarterfinal win over wild card Anna-Lena Friedsam is the longest match of the 2019 WTA season to date.
Katerina Siniakova won her only previous meeting with Tamara Zidansek, a 6-0, 6-2 victory at a clay-court Challenger event in Maribor, Slovenia, in 2014.
Zidansek is into her second WTA semifinal of the season, but she is still seeking her first-ever WTA singles final.
