MIAMI, FL, USA – WTA World No.1 Naomi Osaka’s presence at the Miami Open presented by Itau has been confirmed along with that of Serena Williams.
The Australian Open winner heads a high-class field for the Premier Mandatory tournament, in which all of the WTA’s Top 75-ranked players are down to play.
While Osaka will chase a first crown at the event, Serena goes after her ninth title, having first reached the final of the tournament 20 years previous, when she lost out to sister Venus, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. Two years later, she first had the silverware, while she last won it in 2015.
Meanwhile, Florida-native Sloane Stephens is the defending champion, having claimed a 7-6(5), 6-1 win over Jelena Ostapenko 12 months ago.
Other previous winners in the draw are Britain’s Johanna Konta and three-time champion Victoria Azarenka, who reached the semifinal of the event last year in her best performance since returning to the Tour from maternity leave.
The tournament, which will boast a main draw of 96 players, in which the 32 seeds have a first-round bye, begins on March 18 and runs through to March 31.
Having previously been played at Crandon Park, Key Biscayne, it will move to Hard Rock Stadium, home of the Miami Dolphins.
