ROME, Italy - Karolina Pliskova swept into the third round of the Internazionali BNL D'Italia as she beat Lauren Davis 6-1, 6-1 in under an hour.
It was an impressively dominant display from the Czech, taking only 57 minutes to power past her 23-year-old opponent.
The World No. 3, who received a bye into the second round, had never previously made it past the first round in her previous two visits to Rome.
Her seventh successive victory over an American opponent takes her through to a third round encounter with Timea Bacsinszky, who beat Pliskova in Rome in 2015. The Swiss beat Barbora Strycova 6-4, 6-2 to progress on Wednesday.
Davis had been taken to three sets by Carla Suarez Navarro in her previous match but had no answer to the power and dominance of her higher-ranked opponent here in the first meeting of the pair.
"I think this was my easiest match this year," Pliskova admitted afterwards. "I am excited to be in the third round here - it's my first win in this tournament, a big win for me. Hopefully I can still improve - I am expecting a tough one against Timea. It's not going to be easy."
Pliskova sent down five aces to Davis's one, making just one double fault throughout the encounter. "I played pretty fast and pretty aggressive," Pliskova continued. "It's 30 degrees outside, it's flying a lot and it's quite fast. I like weather like this, for me it's better to play in these conditions."
The 25-year-old, who can reach 400 career victories should she reach the quarter-finals this week, hopes to add to her two previous titles this year, won in Brisbane and Doha.
She also reached her first Grand Slam final at the US Open last summer.
