Naomi Osaka has withdrawn from her match with Kiki Bertens due to a hand injury so the Madrid champion gets a walkover into the semifinals.
In a battle of former World No.1 players, Victoria Azarenka brings a 4-3 head-to-head lead into her match with Karolina Pliskova. Azarenka leads their clay-court record 2-1, and their most recent match took place on clay in Stuttgart last month, which Azarenka won 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Azarenka has the most Rome match-wins of all of the remaining players in the singles draw. She picked up her 19th victory at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia after Garbine Muguruza retired during their third-round match on Thursday. Azarenka is 19-9 overall in Rome, with her best result being a runner-up performance in 2013 (losing to Serena Williams).
Marketa Vondrousova has won her only prior meeting with Johanna Konta in straight sets, which took place on the hardcourts of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells last year.
Qualifiers Kristina Mladenovic and Maria Sakkari will meet for the first time in the elite eight in Rome on Friday. The last qualifier to reach the semifinals in Rome was Daria Gavrilova in 2015.
Weather: Sunshine and temperatures of 20C/68F with little prospect of the rain that so disrupted Wednesday's play.
