Marketa Vondrousova takes a 1-0 head-to-head lead into her match with Simona Halep. The 19-year-old Czech upset Halep in the round of 16 at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells earlier this season. That was the first of Vondrousova's back-to-back quarterfinal showings at Indian Wells and the Miami Open this year.

Halep is seeking her first Rome title, after falling to Elina Svitolina in the final in the last two years. She was also a semifinalist in 2013 and 2015 and holds a 15-6 career win-loss record at the event overall.

Last week's Mutua Madrid Open champion Kiki Bertens will face lucky loser Amanda Anisimova for the first time. Bertens was the ace leader for the year coming out of Madrid, but Karolina Pliskova reclaimed the lead after firing five aces in her first-round win on Tuesday. Pliskova leads the live ace race 222-219.

Petra Kvitova is 1-0 against Yulia Putintseva. Kvitova outlasted Putintseva 6-7(4), 7-6(3), 6-4 in their only previous encounter, at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells last year. Kvitova's best performances at Rome are quarterfinal runs in 2012 and 2015.
