Johanna Konta celebrated her 26th birthday yesterday.

Venus Williams beat Yaroslava Shvedova in her opening match and Lesia Tsurenko in the second round this year - her 30th and 31st win here at Rome. Her overall record on the clay of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia now stands at 31-11.

Timea Bacsinszky, who faces WTA World No.3 Karolina Pliskova today, has a 6-15 record against Top 5-ranked opponents in career, most recently defeating No.4 Garbiñe Muguruza at Madrid last week.

Pliskova scored her first win in Rome with her defeat of Lauren Davis on Wednesday - in the previous two years she had lost in the first round.

Anett Kontaveit beat World No.1 Angelique Kerber in the previous round, including an emphatic 6-0 scoreline in second set. The last player to win a set 6-0 against Kerber was Halep at Montreal last year.
