5 KEY FACTS FOR WEDNESDAY'S MATCHES

Angelique Kerber has only gone past the second round in Rome once - in 2012, where she lost in the semifinal to eventual champion Maria Sharapova.

Garbiñe Muguruza is bidding for her first win on clay this year, having suffered a disappointing first-round exit at Madrid last week, losing to Timea Bacsinszky, and an opening-match loss at Stuttgart, losing to Anett Kontaveit following a first-round bye.

Muguruza's last win on clay came in the 2016 Roland Garros final when she beat Serena Williams.

This is the first time Venus Williams and Lesia Tsurenko have played.

When Williams beat Yaroslava Shvedova in her opening match this week, that was her 30th win  at Rome.
