Elise Mertens has won all three previous meetings with Mihaela Buzarnescu. The Belgian prevailed in Santa Margherita and Koksijde in 2015 as well as in Hobart earlier this year.

Danielle Collins and Maria Sakkari meet for the first time, with both players also seeking to reach a first WTA final.

Elise Mertens hopes to become the first Belgian to reach the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic final since Kim Clijsters in 2006. That appearance was Clijsters' fifth final in six years of the event.

Six of the last nine finals here have featured an American, although there has never been a Romanian or Greek in the showpiece match.

Maria Sakkari and Elise Mertens are both yet to drop a set at this year's tournament.
