BOL, Croatia – The top seeds were in action on Wednesday as the first round concluded at the Croatia Bol Open, a WTA 125K Series event.
No.5 seed Sara Errani, who took a wildcard into the tournament, and top seed Johanna Larsson eased through in straights sets against a pair of Bulgarians; Errani had little trouble against Aleksandrina Naydenova, winning 6-1, 6-4, and Larsson moved past Elitsa Kostova 6-2, 6-3.
Also in action, Aleksandra Krunic knocked out the No.4 seed Sara Sorribes Tormo in a close 7-5, 6-4 battle. No.7 seed Kristina Kucova also fell, with Ivana Jorovic scoring a 6-0, 7-5 victory. Croatian wildcard Tena Lukas is also through, defeating Xenia Knoll 6-3, 6-1. No.8 seed Maria Sakkari fought past a determined Ajla Tomljanovic, battling past the wildcard 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.
Sakkari also received a walkover into the quarterfinals after Alison Van Uytvanck found herself having to withdraw before their match. The Belgian sustained a left knee injury during fitness training and was unable to compete.
