MATCH POINTS

No.1 seed Jelena Ostapenko will take on Ekaterina Alexandrova in a rain-delayed second round match as they battle for the last quarterfinal spot at the Korea Open.

Ostapenko, a former French Open champion, seeks to defend her Seoul title after winning this tournament as a debutante last year. In 2018, she’s reached the quarterfinals or better at six events, including a final in Miami and semifinal at Wimbledon. Meanwhile, her opponent Alexandrova owns a 1-7 career record in round of 16 matches at WTA-level events.

The winner will have to make a quick turnaround to play No.6 seed Hsieh Su-Wei on the same day. Hsieh is riding a seven-match winning streak and comes into the semifinals red-hot after lifting the trophy at the Japan Women’s Open in Hiroshima last week.

Meanwhile, three other seeds are in action as No.2 Kiki Bertens, No.3 Maria Sakkari and No.7 Irina Camelia-Begu all take the court on Friday. Begu headlined Thursday’s big result, knocking out Agnieszka Radwanska in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals.
