Serena Williams has given fans an update on her pregnancy, posting a picture on social media showing her perched on the edge of a seat, baby bump exposed.

The American, winner of 23 Grand Slams, has provided regular updates on her status in recent months as she nears her due date, with the child - her first - expected at the end of August or in early September.

One Twitter post this week read simply "Just waiting...", with the 35-year-old seemingly counting down the days until the birth.

Serena missed both the French Open and Wimbledon this summer - sitting out the defence of her title in the latter - after announcing the pregnancy in April.

Her last tournament was the Australian Open back in January, when she beat her sister, Venus, in straight sets in the final, despite being nearly two months pregnant.

She is expecting the child with fiancé Alexis Ohanian, a 33-year-old internet entrepreneur and author.

In her time away from the game she has appeared in magazine photoshoots for both Vanity Fair and Vogue, as well as holding a retro baby shower in Miami last month.

She told Vogue earlier this month of her plans to return to defend her Australian title in Melbourne in January.

Unable to defend her rankings points, she has surrendered her No.1 title to Angelique Kerber, reclaimed it again for three weeks before again losing it to Kerber, with Karolina Pliskova now top of the pile.

Garbiñe Muguruza succeeded her as Wimbledon champion last month, as Jelena Ostapenko was the surprise winner at Roland Garros.
