SAN JOSE, CA, USA - Former World No.1 Maria Sharapova will compete in the 2018 Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic in San Jose this summer, the tournament announced today.
“I am excited to return to the Bay Area for the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic,” Sharapova said. “I always enjoy playing in California. The region has tremendous tennis fans, and I can’t wait to see the tournament’s new venue in San Jose.”
This will mark five-time Grand Slam champion Sharapova’s fifth visit to the event. Her best result came in 2010, when she advanced to the tournament final. Sharapova will join defending champion Madison Keys and finalist CoCo Vandeweghe in the tournament player field.
Formerly known as the Bank of the West Classic and held at Stanford University, the tournament announced a move to its new home at San Jose State University earlier this year. The 2018 Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic will take place from July 30 to August 5, 2018, and is the first event in the US Open Series, which leads up to the final Grand Slam event of the year.
Co‐founded by the legendary sportswoman, activist and WTA founder Billie Jean King, the tournament was first played in 1971 and is the longest‐running women‐only professional tennis event in the world.
Its list of past champions reads like a who's who of women's tennis including Serena Williams, Lindsay Davenport, Billie Jean King, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Andrea Jaeger, Monica Seles, Martina Hingis, Venus Williams and Kim Clijsters.
