Making her debut appearance in Shenzhen, Maria Sharapova is set to face 2016 runner-up Alison Riske for a spot in the quarterfinals.
Out of six Chinese players in the main draw, two advanced to the second round with victories on Monday: Duan Ying-Ying defeated Evgeniya Rodina to set up a meeting with World No.1 Simona Halep, and wildcard Wang Yafan defeated Italian qualifier Jasmine Paolini to advance into a second round meeting with defending champion Katerina Siniakova.
Halep and Siniakova are both former champions in Shenzhen, and are looking to join Li Na as two-time winners. Li won the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2013 and successfully defended her title in 2014.
