NÜRNBERG, Germany - No. 4 seed Laura Siegemund was forced to retire from the Nürnberger Versicherungscup on Wednesday after suffering a right knee injury late in the second set against Barbora Krejcikova.

Siegemund claimed the opening set, 6-4, and the second round match was all square at 5-5 in the second set after two hours, 42 minutes when the German took a hard fall behind the baseline in the middle of the Czech's service game. She later needed the assistance of a stretcher to leave the court.

With the year's second Grand Slam to begin in Paris on Sunday, the World No.32 is in position to be seeded at the French Open for the first time in her career thanks to her successes in the clay court season.

With the retirement, the 21-year-old Krejcikova advances to the quarterfinals, her first of 2017, after coming through qualifying. The Czech was ranked a career-high of No.140 in 2015, but has slipped down to her current ranking of No.254.
