Rain prevented on-court action at the Miami Open from starting on time - but WTA stars have found plenty to get up to off court, from puppies to basketball.

MIAMI, FL, USA - The first day of play at the Miami Open was, sadly, washed out by rain - but there was still plenty to occupy the stars of the WTA Tour.

Serena Williams woke to find that Brooklyn Nets point guard Spencer Dinwiddie had paid tribute to her during his NBA team's victory over the Sacramento Kings, wearing shoes featuring an image of the 23-time Grand Slam champion. "Crazy cool," she responded on social media.

Meanwhile, a trip to the Humane Society of Greater Miami meant that Jelena Ostapenko and Belinda Bencic got a healthy dose of excitable puppy love.

For others, though, Miami is home - which meant getting to spend time with their own four-legged friends, such as Monica Puig's two Pomeranian-husky mixes Rio and Luna and Amanda Anisimova's chihuahua Miley.

For World No.1 Naomi Osaka, returning home meant a chance to catch up with big sister Mari, who also has a wildcard into the Miami Open this week.

Others opted for quintessential Miami experiences: Tamara Zidansek and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova took in a Miami Heat basketball game, while Anastasija Sevastova headed to the beach - while still repping her own home city of Liepaja, Latvia.

Meanwhile, Garbiñe Muguruza gave back by helping out at the Miami Rescue Mission, while it was all child's play for Petra Kvitova and Simona Halep.
