Ekaterina Alexandrova won her first meeting against Aryna Sabalenka, 6-2, 7-5, in a 2017 ITF final in Shenzhen. But Sabalenka avenged that loss in Shenzhen earlier this year, when she beat Alexandrova 6-3, 6-3 en route to her 2019 Shenzhen Open title.
Petra Kvitova, back up to her career-high ranking of World No.2, beat Donna Vekic, 6-3, 6-4, in their only previous match, in Miami in 2014. Kvitova has won her last three matches against Croatian players; Vekic has lost her last three against Czechs.
Current Russian No.1 Daria Kasatkina has never faced former Russian No.1 Vera Zvonareva previously. 34-year-old Zvonareva, the 2010 Wimbledon and US Open runner-up, is 13 years Kasatkina's senior.
Kiki Bertens won her first three matches against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, which all took place between 2014 and 2016. But since then, Pavlyuchenkova has won their two most recent encounters, at Wuhan last year, and at the Australian Open two weeks ago.
