While the result was not enough to see her qualify for the semifinals, fittingly it ensured a season in which she has reestablished herself as a force at the top of the game in both singles and doubles finished on a high.
"Of course you want to finish the season on a high note - especially this season, I've had a good season, I'm enjoying myself on the court and off the court," Vesnina said. "I've had some great wins and today it was a really good match.
"We were also saying to each other before the match, 'You know, not everyone can finish on a win!' So we were laughing about that a little bit."
A semifinal run at Wimbledon was one of several highlights in singles, while in doubles she triumphed at both the Rio Olympics and BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global alongside long-term partner Ekaterina Makarova.
Her doubles exploits served her well against Bertens, particularly in the second set tie-break when she finished off a point-of-the-tournament contender with some typically potent net play.
"It was a very close match. It was 4-3 and I'd had a lot of problems all match with her serve, so it was really important to win that point," Vesnina said when asked about their epic exchange.
