July 2015 WTA Player Of The Month Finalists

Johanna Larsson: Johanna Larsson began her July by playing a $50,000 ITF Circuit event in Versmold, Germany. She won three consecutive three set matches en route to the final, falling to top-seeded Carina Witthoeft. She then played the Collector Swedish Open, where as the No.7 seed she picked up the first WTA singles title of her career, upsetting Barbora Strycova and Mona Barthel along the way. She also won the doubles title in Bastad alongside Kiki Bertens, before rounding out the month at the NÜRNBERGER Gastein Ladies, falling to eventual runner-up Karin Knapp in the second round. Larsson had four Top 100 wins and is currently tied for her career-high ranking of No.46, which she previously hit in 2011.

Anna Karolina Schmiedlova: WTA Rising Star Anna Karolina Schmiedlova has had an incredible 2015 season and her July was no different. She entered the BRD Bucharest Open as the No.7 seed and dropped only 17 games on her way to the championship, overcoming top seed Sara Errani in the final. The title in Bucharest was the second for Schmiedlova, who also triumphed this April in Katowice. The newly crowned Slovak No.1 then traveled to Bad Gastein where her winning streak was eventually snapped by Samantha Stosur in the semifinals. This sparkling sequence of results rewarded Schmiedlova with a career-high ranking of No.41, and, with just over 100 points to defend the rest of the year, she is likely to rise even higher.

Sam Stosur: Sam Stosur began her July by routing Julia Glushko in the first round in Bastad before suffering a surprise loss at the hands of Lara Arruabarrena. She then headed to Bad Gastein, where, after battling past qualifier Anastasija Sevastova in three sets, the Australian cruised to the final, losing only 12 more games in her next three matches. In the championship match, she snatched victory from the jaws of defeat against Karin Knapp, prevailing 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-2 to lift her second title of the year. Stosur currently stands at No.21 in the rankings and No.23 on the Road To Singapore leaderboard heading into the North American hardcourt season.

Margarita Gasparyan: Margarita Gasparyan kicked off her July at the TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Cup, where she won two qualifying matches to make the main draw. Despite falling to Tsvetana Pironkova at the first hurdle in a three set thriller, she dusted herself down to upset former Australian Open finalist Dominika Cibulkova in the first round of her next event, the Baku Cup. This was the first WTA main draw singles win of the Russian's career, which she followed with three more to book a final meeting with fellow surprise package Patricia Maria Tig. Gasparyan withstood a second set comeback to eventually triumph, 6-3, 5-7, 6-0, before teaming up with Alexandra Panova to collect the doubles title, too. Gasparyan, who is now into the Top 100, also became the first player with a one-handed backhand to win a WTA singles title since Carla Suárez Navarro (Oeiras 2014).
