May 2018 WTA Breakthrough of the Month Finalists

Daria Kasatkina: Already selected as February's Breakthrough of the Month after cracking the Top 20, Kasatkina reached new heights on a major stage at the French Open.

The Russian upset No.2 seed Caroline Wozniacki en route to her first career quarterfinal at a Grand Slam before falling to eventual runner-up Sloane Stephens.

"I realize that the second week of the Grand Slam feels differently than the first week," the Russian revealed after her quarterfinal defeat.

"I'm really happy to have this experience, especially in Roland Garros. I'm sure that it will help me in the future. For me, it's different because I started the first two, three matches on the smaller courts and then, thereafter, the bigger stages and I play on the bigger courts.

"For me it feels differently from Serena or someone else who is starting from the first round to play Philippe Chatrier. But for me it was different, and I'm really happy to have this experience."

Mihaela Buzarnescu: A long list of firsts for Buzarnescu in the past year got even longer at the French Open, as the Romanian not only recorded her first career Grand Slam main draw win in Paris, but rode her form all the way to the second week.

Seeded No.31 at the French Open, Buzarnescu defeated Vania King and Rebecca Peterson without losing a set in the first two rounds, before stunning No.4 seed and pre-tournament favorite Elina Svitolina in straight sets in the third round.

Her run was ended by Madison Keys in the last 16, but the result moved her up three places in the rankings to a career-high World No.30.

Anett Kontaveit: The Estonian was a force over the course of the entire month of May, reaching the last 16 at the Mutua Madrid Open and the French Open, as well as the semifinals of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia.

Kontaveit recorded four Top 10 wins over the course of the month, twice defeating Venus Williams in Madrid and Rome, and adding victories over Caroline Wozniacki (Rome) and Petra Kvitova (French Open).

She was only stopped by the eventual champion in both Madrid and Rome, falling to Kvitova and Elina Svitolina, respectively, while her run in Paris was ended by eventual runner-up Sloane Stephens.
