Kiki Bertens: Bertens had a history-making month for herself and her country in May.
At the Mutua Madrid Open, the Dutchwoman won her first Premier Mandatory title, and became the first woman to win the event without losing a set.
She bear four former Grand Slam champions along the way - Jelena Ostapenko, Petra Kvitova, Sloane Stephens, and Simona Halep in the final - to achieve her feat, and ascended to a new career-high ranking of World No.4 as a result.
By rising to that ranking, she also became the highest-ranking Dutch woman in the history of the WTA. She ultimately authored an eight-match winning streak, as she also reached the semifinals in Rome.
Simona Halep: Halep reached the final of the Mutua Madrid Open for the fourth time in her career in May, setting a tournament record for most finals reached since the event's inception.
Over the course of the week, she defeated Margarita Gasparyan, Konta, Viktoria Kuzmova, Ashleigh Barty and Belinda Bencic before seeing her run ended by Bertens in the final.
Karolina Pliskova: Pliskova won the biggest clay-court title of her career at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome, claiming her third career clay-court crown overall in the Italian capital.
The former World No.1 defeated Ajla Tomljanovic in her first match, and needed to author three-set comebacks against both Sofia Kenin and Victoria Azarenka in consecutive rounds before defeating Maria Sakkari to book her spot in the final.
Once there, she defeated Konta in straight sets to hoist her first trophy this season, and first on clay since winning the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart a year ago.
Johanna Konta: Konta kept her clay form going in Rome, after reaching the finals of Rabat in April, by having her best-ever run at a Premier 5 clay-court event.
The British No.1 scored a string of upsets while unseeded in Rome, beginning with a win over Sloane Stephens in the second round, and scored other notable wins against Venus Williams and Bertens along the way.
With the runner-up result, Konta secured a seeding for herself at the French Open, her first at a Grand Slam since last year's Wimbledon Championships.
