LONDON, Great Britain – Heather Watson and Henri Kontinen kept their dreams for a Wimbledon mixed doubles repeat alive after overcoming a tough challenge from No.4 seeds Sania Mirza and Ivan Dodig to return to the quarterfinals.
The unseeded duo – who’d never played together before their run to the title last year – needed less than an hour and 30 minutes to complete the upset over the veteran team, 7-6(4), 6-4.
They’ll take on the No.10 seeds Gabriela Dabrowski and Rohan Bopanna in the next round, after the pair swept past the all-Croatian duo of Ana Konjuh and Nikola Metkic, 7-6(5), 6-2.
Also in action, the No.2 seeds Elena Vesnina and Bruno Soares are through to the semifinals after a grueling battle against No.15 seeds Barbora Krejcikova and Michael Venus, 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-2.
Vesnina and Soares held two set points in the opening set, but saw their lead slip away as their opponents took the tiebreak. One break of serve made the difference for the No.2 seeds in the second, and they weathered a rollercoaster third set to reel off the last four games in a row to close out the match.
Two seeded teams went out of the competition, with No.9 seeds Abigail Spears and Juan Sebastian Cabal falling 7-6(5), 5-7, 6-3 to Lyudyla Kichenok and Mate Pavic, and Nicole Melichar and Andre Begemann taking down the No.11 seeds Andreja Klepac and Daniel Nestor, 6-3, 6-7(4), 7-5. María José Martínez Sánchez and Marcelo Demoliner are also through, moving past Sabine Lisicki and John Peers in a 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 battle.
