As the Race heads to Charleston, Arantxa Sanchez Vicario gives advice on who you should pick for The Porsche Race To Singapore Challenge.
ARANTXA SANCHEZ VICARIO CHARLESTON PICKS
“Daria Kasatkina has to be favored to defend her title, but it will be a good test. A very complete player, she really announced herself by winning in Charleston last year and she continues to improve so much, especially on the mental side. She has the Top 10 in her sights.”
“Naomi Osaka is another up-and-coming player who has been doing so well, winning Indian Wells and defeating Serena at Miami. She likes to compete against the big players; she can still play without much to lose and improve on her ranking.”
“Julia Goerges had a great end to 2017 and start to 2018, winning three titles in a row and cracking the Top 10 for the first time. She has a great serve and even if she can’t hit as many aces on clay, her serve is very effective on all surfaces. If she’s confident, the rest flows.”
“Anastasija Sevastova is another very talented player who has improved a lot in this second phase of her career. She has a great all-court style of play that we don’t see very often – defensive, aggressive, staying back, coming in, slice, dropshots. She’s very dangerous.”
Looking to take a chance on your picks? Check out Arantxa Sanchez Vicario's sleeper picks:
Sleeper: Carolina Garcia
“Caroline Garcia. She’s the top seed, and she loves to play on clay. She probably hasn’t had the hardcourt results she’d have hoped for recently, but she is settled in the Top 10 and this part of the season is a great opportunity for her.”
Sleeper: Petra Kvitova
“Petra Kvitova, you can never forget. She’s a champion of course, and when she’s on top physically and mentally and with no injuries, she can be almost unbeatable.”
Sleeper: Madison Keys
“Madison Keys is coming back from injury so she hasn’t had the most consistent season so far, but you can never count her out and she could certainly have a great week – especially with the support of the home crowd in the USA.”
Sleeper: Ashleigh Barty
“Ashleigh Barty. Another young one coming up – I love her serve, her forehand, how she moves on the court and her mentality. She’s Australian so maybe doesn’t have the clay background, but the courts in Charleston are a bit faster and I think she has the potential to do really well.”
