Simona Halep

“The top quarter of the draw is strong with players like Simona Halep and Elina Svitolina and others. Gosh, that’s a tough call. I think I’m going to have to go with Halep coming through there, just because I feel like she’s probably the most confident right now.”

Angelique Kerber

“In the second quarter, you’ve got Angelique Kerber, Madison Keys and Petra Kvitova, who has a great record in China, as well. But I like Kerber because she’s been coming back into form – winning Wimbledon was obviously huge – and is looking happy, relaxed and more like her confident self.”

Naomi Osaka

“I commentated one of Naomi Osaka’s matches last year at the US Open and I was like, ‘Wow, I really like this girl. She’s got a great game.’ I thought she could win Grand Slams, but I didn’t expect it to happen so soon. You’re life totally changes and it’s a lot to deal with – it will come down to how she handles the attention and pressure and this Asian swing is a great test.”

Caroline Garcia

“I always like Caroline Garcia, who’s the defending champion at Wuhan and she also won Beijing last year – she knows how to win big in China! I think she’s a great athlete and a great player, and I just have a soft spot for her.”

Outsider picks:

“This is such a strong draw, with Karolina Pliskova, Caroline Wozniacki, and of course you’ve got Jelena Ostapenko in there – you can’t forget her, she’s a grand slam champion. Man, this is a tough call. We’ll just see what happens!”
