Simona Halep

“Simona Halep played a lot of tennis in a short period of time in Montreal, but she gets a day off for the bye, and she’s in a relatively soft section of the draw to start, which I think gives her a bit of time to recover before later rounds. With each match in Montreal she played better – she’s moving incredibly well, playing with accuracy and building confidence.”

Sloane Stephens

“Sloane Stephens played spectacular tennis in Montreal, really using her great combination of defense and offense. There are very few players that have both on the tour, to the extent that Sloane does. She’s really been patient enough and shown smart shot selection. And she seems relaxed. She seems to be playing with the right amount of energy, and very happy.”

Caroline Wozniacki

“Caroline Wozniacki had match point before losing her opening match in Montreal to Sabalenka, who played lights out. I just feel Caroline will build her way into the tournament, although a tough opening match looms against Bertens or Vandeweghe. She’s back on hardcourts, she seems to love the summer US Open Series, and she’ll be determined to notch some wins before the US Open.”

Serena Williams

“Serena Williams is very motivated to have deep run in Cincy to prepare for the US Open. We know what happens when Serena sets her mind to something. Watch out. Unseeded and very dangerous, especially if she gets a couple wins under her belt. She always gets so much better with each victory. If her serve is on, and groundstrokes finding targets, she’s tough to beat.”

Sleeper Pick: Elina Svitolina

“Elina Svitolina seems very motivated. She lost early at Wimbledon, and apparently didn’t take any time off, went straight back into training for four weeks. With that kind of motivation and a solid SF result in Montreal as defending Rogers Cup champion, she’s got some momentum.”

Sleeper Pick: Angelique Kerber

“Angelique Kerber looked a bit fatigued in her opening match in Montreal, and that loss to Cornet must have stung, but now that she’s had some more time to practice on the hardcourts, her opponents had better watch out.”

Other picks to consider:

“The whole section that contains Caroline Garcia and Karolina Pliskova is one to watch. Agnieszka Radwanska, Johanna Konta, Sabalenka, Victoria Azarenka, Carla Suarez Navarro. Whoever comes through there is either going to be playing fantastic tennis, or very tired! There’s so much depth in women’s tennis right now – this is like Vegas!”
