Just over a year after her maiden Grand Slam victory, Garbiñe Muguruza did it again, following up her Roland Garros title with a fairytale fortnight on the lawns of Wimbledon.
"It was amazing," Muguruza said after the match. "I always used to look at the wall and see all the names and all the history. I lost a final already and I was like, 'I was close.'
"I didn't wanted to lose this time, because I know the difference. I really know the difference of making a final, which is incredible, but I'm so happy that my name is there now."
The Spaniard put pen to paper from her first match, reaching the second week without dropping a set. Surviving a three-set thriller with top seed and then-WTA World No.1 Angelique Kerber, Muguruza continued her momentum though her final three matches, winning the last nine games against five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams to return to the Top 10 and crack the Top 3 on the Porsche Race to Singapore leaderboard.
"I'm very satisfied because I didn't know how it was going to go. I was very nervous, you know, tense. I wanted it to go my way. I was doing everything I could to be prepared.
"Once you step on the court, you see the crowd, you see it's the final, and you see I'm here playing another Wimbledon final. So I'm very satisfied the way I handled it."
