Angelique Kerber came into April followed by a trail of disappointing results - the 27-year-old German had won just three of her last 11 matches. All of that changed when she reached the green clay of Charleston. She went on to win her first WTA clay title of her career at the Family Circle Cup, defeating her countrywoman Andrea Petkovic, 6-4, 6-4, in the semifinals before downing American WTA Rising Star Madison Keys in a tough three set final, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.
Kerber joined the German Fed Cup team in Russia for the World Group semifinal. She won against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in comprehensive straight sets, salvaging a point for her country, but that would not be enough to push them into the Fed Cup final. Kerber then headed to Stuttgart looking to extend her clay win streak.
After a comfortable win over lucky loser Alexa Glatch, Kerber would square off against three-time defending champion Maria Sharapova in the round of 16. The German edged Sharapova, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1. She then went on to win the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix title, gritting out a thrilling 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 victory against Caroline Wozniacki. "A few days ago I said clay is actually not my favorite surface, but right now I think I will change my mind," Kerber said. "I've played very well on clay the last few days and weeks. I feel good that I have had so many matches on clay, and now I'm looking forward to the next tournaments before Paris," said Kerber, who went 11-0 in April.
For that reason, Angelique has been voted April's WTA Player of the Month.
