Third seed Sloane Stephens had her best showing at the Rogers Cup last year, when she reached the semifinal but lost to Wozniacki.

Stephens has played Anastasija Sevastova twice before - both times last year, both times on a hard court. The Latvian won their encounter in the Zhuhai first round, 7-5, 6-3, and the American won their quarterfinal match at the US Open en route to the title, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(4).

Halep leads her head-to-head with Caroline Garcia 4-1. All five matches have taken place in the last two years, including one at last year's edition of the Rogers Cup, which Halep won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.

Elise Mertens and Elina Svitolina have played only once before on a hard court - earlier this year, in the quarterfinal of the Australian Open. The Belgian won 6-4, 6-0.
