MATCH POINTS

Simona Halep, who reached the final in Rome last year, must win her match against Madison Keys if she wants to keep her hope to retain the World No.1 ranking next week alive. Halep dropped her first meeting with Keys at Sydney in 2014, but since then, she has won five straight, including a third-round victory in Rome later that same year.

Caroline Wozniacki can return to World No.1 after Rome if current No.1 Halep fails to reach the quarterfinals and advance one round further than Wozniacki. Wozniacki has won all three of her previous matches against Anastasija Sevastova, each in straight sets.

Venus Williams has a chance to avenge her most recent loss when she takes on Anett Kontaveit for the second tournament in a row. Kontaveit emerged victorious over Williams in three sets in the opening round of the Mutua Madrid Open last week. Williams had won their previous two matches: at the US Open in 2015, and at Roland Garros in 2016.

Defending champion Elina Svitolina has won all three of her prior matches against Daria Kasatkina, including a 6-4, 6-0 victory in the final of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships in February of this year.
