SINGAPORE - A fifth doubles team has qualified for the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global, the WTA's crown jewel event that boasts a $7-million purse that will take place at the Singapore Sports Hub from October 25 to November 1. Wimbledon semifinalists and three-time 2015 WTA titlists Timea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic are the latest to earn berths for the eight-team field that will compete for the WTA Finals Martina Navratilova Trophy.
Babos and Mladenovic will participate in the WTA Finals for the first time, but these two WTA Rising Stars have been formidable opponents on the doubles court since reaching the finals at the All England Club in 2015. Winning titles in Dubai, Rome, and Marrakech, the Hungarian/French connection also reached the semifinals in Sydney and Miami.
"I'm very excited to qualify for the WTA Finals Singapore for the first time," said Mladenovic, who was also in contention to qualify for the singles event until the start of the China Open. "It will be such a great first experience and I'm definitely looking forward to it. This year was such a great adventure with Timea - we had a great season and this is something big. We are very proud to qualify, it will be a wonderful atmosphere."
The team joins Australian Open and French Open champions, Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Safarova, Wimbledon and US Open winners, Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza, US Open finalists Casey Dellacqua and Yaroslava Shvedova, and Wimbledon runners-up Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina.
