Anna Karolina Schmiedlova is the only former champion remaining in the draw, and the only non-Romanian champion in the tournament's history. The Slovak lifted the trophy in 2015, defeating Sara Errani 7-6(3), 6-3 in the final for her second career title. She has faced today's opponent, Laura Siegemund, once before: the German won the 2012 Darmstadt ITF $25,000 final 7-6(7), 6-3.

Former World No.2 Vera Zvonareva will bid for the second WTA quarterfinal of her comeback today following her run to the Tashkent semifinals last September. Overall, the Russian is 5-5 in WTA main draws since returning to the sport.

Zvonareva's opponent Ons Jabeur has dramatically turned around her year in the last two months. The Tunisian won just one of her first 10 matches of 2018 - but since May has gone 14-6, including the biggest title of her career in the Manchester ITF $100,000 event and her debut main draw at Wimbledon. Jabeur and Zvonareva have met once before, in the first round of the 2015 Australian Open, with the Russian winning 6-2, 6-3.

2017 Wimbledon junior winner Claire Liu, who was the only player to take a set off this year's champion Angelique Kerber, will seek to make her first WTA quarterfinal today against No.4 seed Petra Martic. A victory over the Croat would also be the 18-year-old qualifier's maiden Top 50 win.

The WTA baby boom continues with Andreea Mitu's return from maternity leave. The 26-year-old former World No.68, who gave birth to son Adam in January, has played four ITF $15,000 events already this year - winning one - but is playing the first WTA tournament of her comeback at home this week in the doubles draw alongside Irina-Camelia Begu.
