MATCH POINTS

Thirteen years after their first encounter, 39-year-old Patty Schnyder and 34-year-old Samantha Stosur will play again for the fifth time. The head-to-head is all square at 2-2: the Swiss player won the Gold Coast final in 2005 for her ninth career title (Stosur was playing her first ever final) 1-6, 6-3, 7-5, and backed it up two years later in the third round of Rome. Stosur began to turn the rivalry around on the clay of Madrid in 2010, and was victorious again in the third round of Dubai the following year.

If Schnyder beats Stosur on Thursday, it would be her first Top 100 win since, coincidentally, Dubai 2011 where, one round before losing to the Australian, she defeated Zheng Jie 1-6, 6-0, 6-2. Since returning to the sport in 2015, the mother-of-one has captured four ITF titles, won two WTA main draw matches and reached No.139 in the rankings; her best win by ranking was over No.114 Sofia Kenin in the first round of the Macon ITF $80,000 event last October.

Another WTA Tour mother, Mandy Minella, is in action, having scored the first WTA main draw win of her comeback on Wednesday against Tereza Martincova. The Luxembourger trails No.2 seed Johanna Larsson 1-3 in a rivalry that dates back to the first round of the Sutton ITF $25,000 event in 2008, which Larsson won 6-0, 6-2. Minella would win their next encounter in the 2012 Bad Gastein quarterfinals 1-6, 6-2, 6-2, but the Swede pulled ahead thanks to two wins in clay ITF $100,000 events in 2014, in Cagnes-sur-Mer and Contrexéville.

No.1 seed Alizé Cornet faces Conny Perrin for the second time this year, having eked out a tight 7-6(2), 7-6(2) victory in Stuttgart qualifying in April. Qualifier Perrin, whose first-round win over Zheng Saisai was her second at WTA main draw level, is bidding for her fourth career Top 100 - and first Top 50 - win.

Eugenie Bouchard, bidding to make her first quarterfinal since Taipei City in February, faces local favorite Viktorija Golubic, against whom she won their sole previous meeting in Cincinnati qualifying in 2016.
