LUXEMBOURG, Luxembourg - The variety of Roberta Vinci was too much for Julia Goerges on Sunday, bringing her the BGL BNP Paribas Luxembourg Open title with a 63 64 championship victory in front of a packed house.
The unseeded Vinci, who was points away from losing to Barbora Zahlavova Strycova in the second round earlier this week, got all the way to the final and gave the No.8-seeded Goerges all sorts of problems from the get-go, breaking early in both sets and absorbing eight aces with her crafty all-court game.
"Julia is a very good player, but I don't think today was her best day," Vinci said. "The turning point for me this week was my second round match, when I won 7-6 in the third set. After that I knew I could go far, maybe the semis. Today I tried to stay focused on every point, especially on my serve games, and it worked.
"Now I'm going to go home for a week and then to the Fed Cup final."

Vinci won her third career WTA title, having already prevailed on clay at Bogotá in 2007 and Barcelona in 2009. She improved to 3-1 in finals, finishing runner-up at Barcelona this year to Francesca Schiavone (who then won the French).
Goerges was playing in her second career WTA final, having won on the clay of Bad Gastein this year. She had taken out No.4 seed Ana Ivanovic in straight sets in the quarterfinals on Friday. "I was pretty tired today," Goerges said. "Roberta played some really good tennis and I just wasn't able to make it."
In the doubles final, No.2 seeds Timea Bacsinszky and Tathiana Garbin upset No.1 seeds Zahlavova Strycova and Iveta Benesova, 64 64, for their third WTA title as a team, having won Budapest and Prague in the summer.
