LINZ, Austria - Mihaela Buzarnescu came through in three sets against the returning Belinda Bencic, beating the Swiss 6-4, 5-7, 7-6(4), to reach the semifinals of the Upper Austria Ladies Linz.

The Romanian has enjoyed an impressive run in the tournament so far, beating fourth seed Anett Kontaveit in straight sets before defeating Alja Tomljanovic in another three-set encounter.

Bencic, the former World No.7, had reached the quarterfinals by beating Spain's Lara Arruabarrena in a lengthy three-set match.

The Swiss played her first WTA match since April in the Linz first round, having taken three months off for surgery to her left wrist.

"It was such a heartbreaking loss," admitted Bencic afterwards. "I played an amazing match. I was fighting until the end, until I couldn't any more. It was just unfortunate today, and probably not meant to be."
