LEARNING

The youngest player still standing, Japan’s Naomi Osaka (20 years, 104 days), becomes the youngest Japanese player to reach the Round of 16 at the Australian Open since 1990 (Kimiko Date, 19 years, 122 days) and the youngest from her country to reach this stage at any Slam since 1995 Roland Garros (Ai Sugiyama at 19 years, 342 days). Hsieh Su-Wei (32) is the oldest player remaining in the draw.

Simona Halep is bidding to reach the quarterfinals for the third time, after 2014 (when she lost to the eventual runner-up Dominika Cibulkova) and 2015 (when she lost to Ekaterina Makarova). Her current run comes after two successive first-round exits.

Barbora Strycova is the only player on tour who has reached the Round of 16 in each of the last three years.

Madison Keys is the only American woman left in the draw.
