SINGAPORE - Day 1 of the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global is in the books and the White Group saw a pair of upsets set the table for the rest of the week.

No.6 seed Elina Svitolina came into the tournament struggling to find consistent form, but the 24-year-old laid down her best performance in months to stun No.4 seed Petra Kvitova to win 6-3, 6-3. No.7 Karolina Pliskova followed that up with another stunner, saving 10 of 10 break points to defeat defending champion and No.2 seed Caroline Wozniacki 6-2, 6-4.

Sunday's results mean Wozniacki and Kvitova will face off on Tuesday evening (Kvitova leads the head-to-head 8-5), followed by Svitolina against Pliskova (Pliskova leads the head-to-head 5-2).

Here are the qualifying scenarios for the White Group after Day 1:

- If Svitolina and Kvitova win, Svitolina qualifies as group winner, Wozniacki is eliminated (Kvitova and Pliskova would play for the No.2 qualifying spot on Thursday).

- If Svitolina wins in straight sets and Wozniacki wins in three sets, Svitolina qualifies (position TBD).

- If Pliskova and Wozniacki win, Pliskova qualifies as group winner, Kvitova is eliminated (Wozniacki and Svitolina play for the No.2 qualifying spot on Thursday).

- If Pliskova wins in straight sets and Kvitova wins in three sets, Pliskova qualifies (position TBD).

Any other combination of results will mean qualification comes down to Thursday’s final group matches.
