QUEBEC CITY, Canada - Top seed Lucie Safarova scored her fifth win in five career meetings against compatriot Lucie Hradecka at the Coupe Banque Natioanle on Friday, moving through to the semifinals 6-4, 7-5.
After falling behind 3-0 in the opening set, Safarova won four games in a row to move from a break down to a break up, and hardly looked back from there. The World No.33 snagged the lone break of the second set as well in the 11th game, and dropped just five points on serve in the set.
"Lucie started very well. She was serving really consistent, and she has an amazing serve," Safarova said. "I was waiting for any opportunity. I had a little slow start to get used to the faster timing on the courts, and I'm pretty happy with my game. I was serving well, returning well and in both sets I was able to break her.
"I've won all our matchups, but it was always good matches usually. I know I have to be very concentrated because if she's serving very consistent, she doesn't give you many opportunities."
The top seed will next face No.3 seed Timea Babos, who ended Canada's hopes for a home title-winner with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Francoise Abanda.
"We played in Budapest [in the final] when I lost to her in three sets," Safarova said of the No.3 seed. "She's a big server, better from the backhand side, a big fighter and runs well. It should be a good match."
The other semifinal will see No.7 seed Alison Van Utyvanck take on No.4 seed Tatjana Maria after both dispatched their American quarterfinal opponents with the loss of just four games. Van Utyvanck defeated teenager Caroline Dolehide, 6-2, 6-2, in the latter's first WTA quarterfinal, while Maria saw off Sachia Vickery, 6-3, 6-1.
The German will be contesting her first WTA semifinal at age 30, while the 23-year-old Van Uytvanck looks to make her first WTA final.
In the doubles, Canada did have something to cheer about, as the teenaged duo of Bianca Andreescu and Carson Branstine defeated No.2 seeds Hradecka and Barbora Krejcikova, 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 to reach their first WTA semifinal.
