Host country of the WTA's Baku Cup in July, Azerbaijan is situated at the crossroads of eastern Europe and western Asia on the southern shore of the Absheron Peninsula. The capital of Azerbaijan as well as its scientific, cultural and industrial center, Baku is the largest city of the Caspian Sea and of the Caucasus region. It is also one of the top destinations in the world for urban nightlife.

First held in 2011, the tournament is staged at the Baku Tennis Academy, which has a 10,000-seat capacity main stadium. There is also a 3,000-seat center court and 12 additional courts.
