SINGAPORE - WTA Finals Legend Ambassador Lindsay Davenport, WTA Finals Community Ambassador Judy Murray and over 100 young players took to the court in Singapore for the inaugural WTA Charities Community Day.
The Community Day brought together over 40 children and young adults from SportCares, wheelchair tennis, Special Olympics and SC Global’s Tennis for Every Child program for a special tennis clinic.
They were accompanied by 48 WTA Future Stars, which assisted Davenport and Murray in the clinic.
“I had so much fun at the clinic today!” said 16-year-old WTA Future Star Tracy Llamas, from the Philippines said. “It was such a great opportunity to meet with Coach Judy and Lindsay, and I learned a lot from assisting them. I’m glad to have been able to also encourage other kids to play tennis too.”
“I am so pleased to have been able to join the WTA today to run a huge community tennis session for over 50 players of mixed ages and abilities,” Murray said. “We were joined by 48 Future Stars from 21 countries and were able to show how to accommodate 101 players on one court. We showed how tennis can be fun and inclusive for the whole community and hopefully inspired all of them to keep playing.”
The WTA Charities Community Day is part of WTA’s efforts to promote active living through tennis by engaging with local communities.
Started in 2017, the WTA Charities aims to inculcate in the next generation the importance of living a healthy and productive life, while showing them the value of teamwork, discipline, and determination, values which can be closely associated to the greatest eight players in the 2017 WTA Finals.
“This is my first time in Singapore as a WTA Finals Legend Ambassador, and I am so glad to be able to give back to the local community,” Davenport said. “It was great to share some of my experiences and hopefully the participants today had a good time and continue to pursue their passion in tennis.”
Doubles star Anna-Lena Groenefeld, who is a part of the doubles field at the WTA Finals along with partner Kveta Peschke, was also on hand to help Davenport, Murray and the WTA Future Stars at the clinic.
