Diyas dazzles and defeats Zhang in Tokyo
TOKYO, Japan - Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan was the latest player to pull off a shock at the Japan Women's Open as she beat second seed Zhang Shuai in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.
The 23-year-old had showed some good form in Dalian last week, reaching the semifinal before losing to eventual champion Kateryna Kozlova 6-4, 7-5.
Sara Sorribes Tormo, who beat fifth-seeded Samantha Stosur earlier in the week, could not continue her campaign, losing 6-1, 6-1 to the USA's Christina McHale; but Jana Fett, vanquisher of Kristina Mladenovic, beat Jana Cepelova, 6-0, 6-3.
Elsewhere, there was a straight-sets win for Wang Qiang, beating Kurumi Nara of Japan 6-2, 6-3; and Yulia Putintseva progressed when Han Xinyun retired, with the Kazakh player 6-2, 2-0 up.
