Halep hits the courts ahead of Sharapova clash

Romania's Simona Halep faces Maria Sharapova in the Arthur Ashe Stadium on Day 1 of the US Open at Flushing Meadows.

Sharapova was given a wildcard and was subsequently drawn against Halep, who has never beaten the Russian in six attempts.

The two play in the evening session on Day 1, which starts no earlier than 7pm EST.

Wimbledon champion Garbiñe Muguruza kicks off the first day of action on Arthur Ashe Stadium with Varvara Lepchenko. Ninth seed Venus Williams - who lost to the Spaniard in the final of The Championships - faces Viktoria Kuzmova on the same court.
