CHARLESTON, SC, USA - Sloane Stephens announced she would withdraw from this week's Volvo Car Open on Monday.

"I'm so sorry to announce I won't be playing in Charleston this week," Stephens said in a statement. "My run to the title in Miami last weekend has left me completely exhausted/fatigued both physically and mentally. I don't feel prepared to play my best and therefore its in my best interest to get some rest.

"I want to thank Bob Moran and Eleanor Adams for all their support over the years, Charleston is truly one of the best events on the tour and I sincerely look forward to playing again many times in my career. I wish the best of luck to all the girls this week."

Stephens won the title back in 2016, defeating Elena Vesnina for what at the time was the biggest title of her career. The American went on to win her maiden major trophy at last summer's US Open, defeating fellow Americans Venus Williams and Madison Keys after nearly a year away from tennis to heal a foot injury.

She made a long-awaited debut into the world's Top 10 on Monday after taking home the Miami Open crown in Crandon Park.

Stephens is replaced in the draw by lucky loser Dayana Yastremska.
